Combining materials of redwood, steel, stone, and trex, the Auralian Phant took inspiration from the shape of the wine barrels that form the culture and landscape of this corner of the world. Each and every piece is custom from the steel railing, to the eye-like lookout window.

The challenge was to preserve the living branches throughout this remarkable stand of oak trees while orienting the home and deck toward sweeping wine country views. With architectural forms designed to weave through the natural structure of the trees, the residence turns the canopy itself into part of the architecture. Curving forms exist in the trees are then mirrored in the heavy steel beams, expansive glazing, and custom stairways. Branches flow between decks and lead to a play net that creates a loft that feels organic, immersive, and deeply relaxing in this setting.

Rather than imposing a conventional building on the landscape, the design responds to the trees—creating unexpected rooms, secret bunks, framed views, and outdoor spaces among the branches.
